The Department of Agriculture, Kwaebibirem Municipal, in collaboration with Hunger GH, organized a practical training session on vegetable nursery preparation at Abehenase. The initiative forms part of a nutrition-sensitive agriculture programme aimed at improving household nutrition and promoting sustainable vegetable production within the community.
The programme specifically targeted nursing mothers with children under five (5) years of age. The objective was to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to establish vegetable nurseries and subsequently cultivate nutrient-rich vegetables at home. This initiative seeks to improve access to fresh, healthy vegetables, thereby contributing to balanced diets and enhanced nutritional outcomes for young children during their critical growth and development stages.
During the training, Agricultural Extension Officers demonstrated the proper techniques for nursery site selection, seedbed preparation, sowing of vegetable seeds, watering, shading, and general nursery management. Participants were also educated on the nutritional importance of vegetables in child feeding, emphasizing the role of vitamins and minerals in promoting healthy growth and preventing malnutrition among children under five.
The collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and Hunger GH reflects a shared commitment to improving food and nutrition security through community-based interventions. By empowering nursing mothers with practical agricultural skills, the programme is expected to enhance household vegetable production, improve dietary diversity, and contribute to better health and nutrition for children and their families in Abehenase and surrounding communities.
